Most of the big streets in Altadena, Lake, Lincoln and Fair Oaks among them, start in Pasadena and simply keep going uphill, so the line between the two is easy to miss. Los Angeles County runs Altadena directly, without a city hall, yet it has always had its own main streets, its own trailheads and its own habits. The January 2025 Eaton Fire burned through most of the community, destroying well over half of its buildings, and rebuilding now sets the pace of daily life. The older one runs from Craftsman bungalows and Spanish houses of the 1920s through postwar ranches, many on deep, planted lots, including the steep-roofed cottages of Janes Village. The mountains are the backyard. The Sam Merrill Trail leaves from the top of Lake Avenue and switchbacks up the front range, and the old Cobb Estate grounds sit near the same trailhead. Altadena Triangle Park reopened in mid-2025, and the county is working through longer restorations at other parks and at the Altadena Golf Course. Food right now is a mix of survivors and comebacks. Fair Oaks Burger in west Altadena and Miya, a Thai kitchen on Lake Avenue, kept serving after the fire, and Altadena Cookie Co. reopened in a new spot on Lincoln Avenue. Unincorporated Coffee Roasters, also on Lincoln, is where a lot of mornings start. Errands happen along Lake Avenue, with bigger shopping trips heading south into Pasadena. Freeway access means dropping down through Pasadena to the 210, and almost every trip begins behind the wheel, though the flatter blocks near Lake are easy to walk. The tradeoff is the one the fire made impossible to ignore. Living here today means watching the town come back one lot at a time, with the mountains still standing over all of it.
