City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Sand Cut History, Pajaro River Valley, Fireclay Tile

Aromas is an unincorporated community in the Pajaro River valley, right on the Monterey and San Benito County line, with Santa Cruz County just past its northwest edge. Highway 101 passes along the southeastern side, and the farm and vineyard land around it makes the place feel more like countryside than a town. The railroad is behind the original name. The stop here was first known as Sand Cut, after a cut and tunnel the Southern Pacific built nearby, and the community later took the name Aromas from the old Mexican rancho whose land it grew on. Where the tracks and the river once set the rhythm, the valley now runs on farms, trucks and commuters on the highway. Work in Aromas is tied to the ground. Graniterock runs a quarry here that it counts as a flagship operation, and Fireclay Tile, founded in 1986, makes its handcrafted tile at a factory in the community. That gives a small place more industry than its size suggests. Hills nearby hold small vineyards, which adds a hint of wine country. Public schools here belong to a district shared with San Juan Bautista, so students often travel along the Highway 101 corridor. Day to day, the village blocks hold a market, a grill and a library, and weekends fill with people heading to the community park or to tasting rooms in the hills. Gilroy is the nearest larger town, up the highway to the north, and the road continues south toward Salinas. There is no downtown beyond the village blocks, and sidewalks are scarce. Life here depends on the car and on two county governments, since every service comes down to which side of the line a parcel sits on. What the community keeps is a rural pace, a short list of local landmarks and the quiet that comes from sitting just off the freeway.
