Athens Westmont, CA

Three long avenues give Athens-Westmont its shape. Vermont, Normandie and Western run north to south across this county-governed ground in Los Angeles County. Westmont covers the upper end and Athens sits below it. Inglewood and Hawthorne border it on one side, and Gardena waits at the southern edge. The two halves feel related but not identical. Athens, split by the Century Freeway, opens up a little around a community college campus and the county golf course. Across both, the side streets are flat and residential, lined with small stucco and frame houses, many of them rentals, plus low apartment blocks near the avenues. Outdoor time here centers on two county facilities. A smaller county park on Vermont adds an outdoor pool and basketball, and Rowley Memorial Park is just across the line in Gardena for ball fields and a playground. Food in Athens-Westmont is counter food done with care. The name people bring up first is Mom's Bar-B-Q House, over on Imperial Highway, with ribs, chicken, catfish and peach cobbler. My Panecito on El Segundo Boulevard bakes pan dulce every morning, including conchas in flavors like pistachio and churro. Daily errands happen on the avenues. Groceries come from the big stores on Western. Bus lines follow each of the major avenues, and C Line trains run down the center of the 105 with stations along the way. SoFi Stadium sits just west in Inglewood, close enough that game days show up in the traffic. The Century Freeway is the main tradeoff. Once past it, though, getting almost anywhere in the county is easy, and the 110 and 105 meeting at the eastern corner make downtown and LAX simple drives from the same front door.
