Boulder Creek is the head of the San Lorenzo Valley, about fifteen miles inland from Santa Cruz, where its namesake stream joins the San Lorenzo River. Highway 9 climbs the valley to reach it, and Brookdale and Ben Lomond are the next two towns back down the road. Two small settlements, Lorenzo to the south and Boulder to the north, merged into the town, which dates its beginning to 1868 and the first school. Timber was the draw. Logs came down the valley in a long wooden flume built in 1875, and when the railroad arrived in 1885 the town became known as the end of the line. The old downtown still carries some of that era in its storefronts, and the San Lorenzo Valley Museum keeps the valley's story in a former Episcopal church nearby. Housing here is spread across forested hills and creek flats, from older cabins to larger houses on wooded lots. Few streets run in a grid, and most follow the creek or climb straight up the slope. Bella's Cafe serves breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Sunday, Tae's Edo Sushi Bar opens in the evenings for sushi, and The Red Pearl does Chinese dishes for dine-in or takeout. Foster's Freeze handles the soft-serve cravings, and River Dogs sells hot dogs from a small counter downtown. The Boulder Creek Branch Library and a farmers market round out the center. People come from elsewhere for the redwoods. Highway 236 leaves the main road here and runs to Big Basin Redwoods State Park, which dates to 1902 and is the oldest in California. The fire of 2020 closed much of it, and recovery continues, but the forest beyond town still holds more open land than anywhere else in the valley. Daily life leans on the car. The town sits farthest from the coast and the larger stores among the valley towns, and the single highway down is the only quick way to reach them. Anyone driving to Santa Cruz plans around the slower hours. Visitors pass through on the way to the redwoods, and the town carries on around them.
