City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Bystrom South Modesto, Airport District Area, Tuolumne River Access

Bystrom is a small unincorporated pocket just below the downtown core of Modesto, one of several built-up communities in the valley that run together without much of a gap. At this size it works as a piece of a larger urban mass instead of a separate town. What the surrounding area offers is breadth. To the south, North Ceres has a long run of fast food, pizza, supermarkets and Mexican restaurants along its commercial streets. Nearby, Modesto's Airport District holds a handful of city parks, and the large Gallo winery buildings stand in the same area. For outdoor time, the closest large option is Tuolumne River Regional Park, the park system that follows the river through Modesto. Smaller city parks such as Mancini Park, La Rio Park and George Rogers Park fill in the gaps for a short trip outside. Ceres has its own river park on the bluffs above the water, which makes a second option for a walk. The older side of the valley shows up in a few places. Ceres keeps its founder's 1870 house on Fifth Street, restored by the city and its historical society, and downtown Modesto has the Gallo Center for the Arts, where touring concerts and local performances share the calendar. Transportation here is largely by car along the routes to Modesto and Ceres, and what Bystrom has for itself is modest. Markets handle groceries and a few eateries serve quick meals, while larger shopping and dining sit a short way off in either direction. Because the valley towns run together, it is hard to tell where one ends and the next begins, and residents tend to think in terms of corridors and cross streets rather than town lines. Few features here belong to the place alone, and what it offers is access and convenience, not a distinct center. That central position within the Modesto area is the main thing the place has going, and for many households it is reason enough.
