City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Monterey Peninsula, Art Colony, Ocean Avenue

Carmel-by-the-Sea sits on Carmel Bay at the southern end of the Monterey Peninsula, a short drive from Pebble Beach and Monterey. A developers' subdivision filed in 1902 drew painters and writers, especially after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and the village became a city in 1916, which explains why downtown reads more like a village green than a main street. The relationship with its setting is the point. Cottages and small commercial buildings crowd the lanes between Ocean Avenue and the sea, and pine and oak woods cover the residential blocks. Building here is tightly regulated, and the cottage look is a result of that. The Carmel Mission, which Father Junipero Serra established on this stretch of coast in 1771, anchors the history. Ocean Avenue runs downhill from the shops and galleries toward the water, and the commercial blocks stay compact, with restaurants, tasting rooms and art galleries side by side. Parks are small and spread through the village, among them Devendorf Park and Forest Hill Park, with Harrison Memorial Library nearby in the village. For a bigger day out, Point Lobos and the white sand of Carmel's beach lie close by, along with the Carmel Pinnacles State Marine Reserve offshore. Carmel Bakery on Ocean Avenue calls itself the original bakery in town, and Bruno's Market & Deli, near Sixth Avenue and Junipero, is a locally owned market with a deli counter. The village is walkable, and the lanes are quiet at night, but no highway runs directly into the center, so every trip starts on local roads. A bus line connects Carmel to the rest of the peninsula. A day in Carmel-by-the-Sea can fit coffee, a walk on the sand and an evening meal without touching the car once it is parked. The old art colony spirit still matters here, visible in the galleries, architecture and unusually creative downtown.
