Most drivers know Commerce from the 5, where the fortress-like wall of the Citadel Outlets, once the front of a tire plant, rises beside the freeway. Those neighborhoods are small and similar to one another. Each pocket covers only a few blocks before the streets turn industrial, so the city has several separate little residential worlds instead of one continuous town. The industrial tax base pays for a lot of public life. Rosewood Park is the busiest spot, and its Brenda Villa Aquatic Center keeps heated pools open year-round. Smaller parks in each neighborhood come paired with branch libraries, and summer brings outdoor movies and concerts. For eighteen holes, Montebello Golf Course is just across the city line. Eating out mostly happens on Atlantic and Washington boulevards. Taco stands and burger counters handle quick meals, a family-run Italian dining room covers sit-down dinners, and La Monarca Bakery on Whittier Boulevard pours cafe de olla alongside conchas and pan dulce. On shopping days, the outlets have their own food court. Commerce is a car town, though the city runs free shuttle buses across its neighborhoods and out to the outlets. A Metrolink station connects to Union Station, and the 5 and 710 put downtown a short drive away. What sets living in Commerce apart is how much the city hands back, from free buses to heated pools, to the relatively small number of people who actually live between its loading docks.
