City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Old Town Hall, Fort Ord, Monterey Peninsula

Del Rey Oaks is one of the smallest cities in Monterey County, a compact stretch of the Peninsula's inland side that Seaside and Monterey press against from every direction. Salinas is a drive over Highway 68, and Monterey's waterfront is only a few minutes west. The city's story is one of choosing to stay separate. Residents voted in 1953 to incorporate rather than be absorbed by their larger neighbors, a close vote according to local reporting, and the city has kept its own council, its own police and public works ever since. That independence still shows at Del Rey Oaks Park, where the old town hall stands among the playground and picnic areas. Because the borders are so tight, daily life spills over the line. Seaside's library and Laguna Grande Park are a short hop away, and Seaside State Beach is a quick drive down to Monterey Bay. Monterey is the bigger town for dinner out, shopping and the waterfront. Hikers head to the former Fort Ord, whose trails begin at the edge of the city, and birders have the Regional Park District's Frog Pond Wetland Preserve, which is closed until further notice during nearby trail construction. The commercial side is thin. Retail is mostly a Safeway and a cluster of restaurants along the boulevard, and State Route 218 is the main road for nearly every trip, with a car as the default way to get around. What you give up is scale. Del Rey Oaks is small enough that its identity leans on what the cities around it are doing, and you may not notice when you cross in or out. What you gain is a council that sits close to its residents and a town hall in a park, a level of closeness that bigger places rarely manage.
