City Review
Key Words: Dunnigan Yolo County, Interstate 5 Stop, Once Antelope Town

Dunnigan is a small farm town in the Sacramento Valley, on the Yolo County side of the line with Colusa County, and the freeway is how most people meet it. It was once known as Antelope, and its post office dates to 1876, so the town has been tied to the road and rail north of Woodland for a long time. The surroundings are wide and flat, the kind of Sacramento Valley country where the horizon stays level for miles. Orchards, row crops and ranch roads fill the land, and directions are given in county road numbers more than in blocks, which can confuse first-time visitors. Harrington lies about five miles to the northwest, Zamora about eight to the southeast, and Woodland, the biggest place nearby, about eighteen. Because so many travelers come through on Interstate 5, the town has a service-stop side and a home-town side. The first is quick and practical, built around the interchange. The second is the quieter grid of homes and farm roads, where daily life moves at a slower pace than the traffic overhead. Sit-down food comes down to Tres Cazuelas Taqueria off County Road 99W, which gives drivers on the interstate a reason to pull off and sit down. For basics, people rely on the small market out on County Road 6, and the weekly shop moves farther afield. Work and school choices pull outward. Most households drive south to Woodland or Davis for shopping, health care and jobs, and the larger Sacramento Valley cities sit farther down the same freeway. Nothing here runs as public transit, so a car is a requirement and not a preference. Newcomers should also know that the town has no central square or walkable core to speak of. Living in Dunnigan suits people who want a quiet home base with farmland on every side and who accept long drives as the cost. The landmark everyone shares is the interstate, and the rest is sky and field.
