East Rancho Dominguez, CA

East Rancho Dominguez has no city government, and Compton wraps around three sides of the Los Angeles County neighborhood. On the fourth, the river channel and the 710 freeway run side by side, with Paramount on the far bank. The whole community fits between Rosecrans Avenue and Alondra Boulevard, and it reads as one continuous grid of single-story houses. Some wear stucco arches and clay tile, others are plain ranch boxes with a lawn and a driveway, and the lots are small enough that neighbors sit close on every street. East Rancho Dominguez Park on Atlantic Avenue does the work a town square would do elsewhere. Venus and Serena Williams learned the game on its courts, which now carry their names, and the county runs summer concerts on the lawn. For ballfields and more open grass, Lueders Park sits west on Rosecrans in Compton. Atlantic Avenue is where the eating happens. Taquerias, mariscos counters and a menudo specialist line the stretch near the park, and Kathy's Bakery is the panaderia people stop at on the way to work. Compton Boulevard adds a second, shorter run of taco stands at the south end. Groceries come from the big Mexican market on Atlantic. Bigger errands leave town. Compton Towne Center on Compton Boulevard covers the chain stores, the Paramount Swap Meet sits just across the river, and Compton College is close by for classes. The 710 on-ramps are a few blocks east, and Metro A Line trains run through Compton to the west. In East Rancho Dominguez, a walk from the park to the library to the bakery covers most of the community, and on concert nights the same few blocks feel full.
