City Review
Key Words: Capay Valley Gateway, Esparto Yolo County, Cache Creek Valley

Esparto anchors the Capay Valley in western Yolo County, a long, narrow stretch of farm country that climbs toward the Coast Range along Cache Creek. A railroad built through the valley in the late 1880s created the townsite, and the community has stayed small since then, with a few thousand residents and a rural character that shows from the first block. Esparto works as the valley's service center. It runs its own school district and has a regional library, and the surrounding land is orchards and field crops that feed a farm-stand and butcher trade. Buckhorn Meat Co, a USDA-inspected processing plant and retail butcher, is one of the valley's food businesses, and Manas Ranch Custom Meats does similar work. Outdoors, the draw is the valley itself. Capay Open Space Park, a short drive north, offers trails for walking and benches for a packed lunch, with the Coast Range foothills meeting the valley floor, and the Cache Creek Conservancy manages related land along the creek. RoadTrip Bar and Grill and The Ravine on Sixteen are the places for a drink and a hot meal. Highway 16 is the main road through the valley, and reaching a hospital, a department store or a freeway means driving out of it. Growers, ranchers and commuters share that road, along with the produce trucks of harvest season, and a full shopping trip out of the valley takes real planning. Distance is the cost. The valley is quiet because it sits well apart from the metro area, and every larger errand is a full trip. Esparto sits where farms, the creek and the foothills meet, and its businesses serve that mix. A butcher, a deli and a farm stand all within a few blocks of each other say a lot about who the town is for, and why a visitor from the city tends to leave with a cooler full of groceries.
