Kinneloa Mesa, a hillside enclave too small for a city government, belongs to Los Angeles County and is reached from Pasadena by Kinneloa Mesa Road and Kinneloa Canyon Road, which climb until the national forest takes over. The founder, Abbot Kinney, gave the streets their Hawaiian-style names. Fire has shaped the place twice since. Rebuilding is still going on, so the hillside now holds a mix of houses that came through, bare pads waiting for permits and new frames going up against the slope. Eaton Canyon, running along the western edge, is where people walk, and the whole natural area is in recovery mode. Since March 2026 the county has run the Landscape Recovery Center there, a native plant nursery growing stock to replant the canyon and six parks across the wash in Altadena. Every errand begins downhill. The Hastings Ranch Shopping Center on Foothill Boulevard, open since 1960, covers groceries, and Panda Inn nearby, opened in 1973 by the family that later started Panda Express, serves Mandarin and Szechuan dishes for a sit-down dinner. The eastern end of the Metro A Line and the 210 are both a short drive down. The tradeoff is access. Kinneloa Mesa asks residents to think about the road home in a way flatland neighborhoods never do. The payoff shows from most driveways, with the forest rising directly behind the houses, the valley lights spread out below and almost no traffic once the sun goes down.
