Knightsen is a small farming community in far eastern Contra Costa County, set on flat Delta-edge land between Oakley, Brentwood and Bethel Island. Highway 4 and the Byron Highway are the main roads people use to reach it. Survey crews for the Santa Fe Railroad came through in 1898, and local families pressed to have the stop named for the Knights, whose farmland the line crossed. Six dairies were soon loading milk onto trains, and by the 1920s Knightsen was one of the busiest milk shipping points in the state. Almonds and apricots grew alongside them, and farming is still the main land use. Horse boarding and small ranches fill in much of the rest. There is no downtown in the usual sense, only a short main street on Knightsen Avenue anchored by a saloon and a deli. The Farm Bureau Hall, built in 1922, hosts celebrations, and people come from other parts of the county for farm stands, horse boarding and wine tasting at McCauley Estate Vineyards. Open space here is working land, but the Marsh Creek Regional Trail and the parks of Brentwood and Oakley are close, and the Delta waterways begin a few miles north. Bethel Island, with its marinas, is the nearest place for a day on the water. Day to day, the pattern is driving. Brentwood has the larger grocery stores and medical offices, while Oakley is closer for quick stops. Highway 4 leads to Antioch and the rest of the Bay Area, and the Byron Highway runs toward Tracy. Transit is thin, so a car is part of living here. Quiet comes with distance. Anyone wanting a walkable downtown or a quick trip to a train station will find Knightsen limited. Anyone wanting acreage, arenas and a view of farm fields will find the town built around that. Knightsen is defined by its roads, ranch gates and orchard rows rather than its storefronts.
