La Verne is a college town wrapped around an old railroad downtown, on Los Angeles County's east flank, with San Dimas on one side and Claremont on the other. Orange groves shaped the place before houses did, and two of them still grow at the Heritage Park off Via De Mansion. The middle of town is mostly postwar ranch houses on regular blocks, and the northern tracts near the foothills are bigger and newer, on streets that curve with the slope. Mobile home parks along Arrow Highway and Bradford Street add another kind of housing at the south end. Trails leave from the upper edge of town and run up into the canyons, so a hike can begin a few blocks from someone's driveway. Small city parks are scattered through the middle neighborhoods for ball games and evening walks. Old Town, around Third and D streets, handles dinner and drinks, with restaurants and a wine bar within a couple of blocks of each other. French Press on Emerald Avenue is the neighborhood espresso bar. Foothill Boulevard is the errand road, with supermarkets and chain stops strung along it, and the 210 runs across the city for longer trips. The Metro A Line reached La Verne/Fairplex station in 2025, adding a train toward Pasadena and downtown Los Angeles. The station sits at the south end, next to the fairgrounds, so for the northern tracts the train is a drive rather than a walk, and daily life up there still runs on the car. Up in those neighborhoods the mountains fill the end of most streets, and Old Town is where people come down to meet.
