City Review
Key Words: Cherry Orchards, Bouquet Canyon Road, Horse Property

Leona Valley is the quiet back way between Palmdale and the Santa Clarita side of Los Angeles County, a long slot of orchards and horse pasture where Elizabeth Lake Road and Bouquet Canyon Road meet. The valley changes as you drive through it. Orchards and small vineyard blocks share the flats with pasture, the grapes grown under the valley's own wine appellation, and the road west keeps climbing past ranch land toward Elizabeth Lake. Houses here are mostly custom builds on roomy parcels, the kind with a barn, a riding arena or a few rows of fruit trees out back. Each place looks different from the next, since the land was split up gradually over the last century rather than built as tracts. From late May into early summer, u-pick farms along Leona Avenue and Elizabeth Lake Road open their gates, and Villa del Sol Sweet Cherry Farms is one of the larger ones, with thousands of trees across roughly 25 acres. Outside the season, the draw is long views of the ridges and back roads that suit horseback riding. Jack's Place is the local table, known for scratch breakfasts and burgers made from beef ground in house. For a bigger night out, locals head west over the hill to The Rock Inn in Lake Hughes, a stone roadhouse known for prime rib, or east into Palmdale for more choice. The limited selection is the real tradeoff. With one diner for breakfast, one Mexican spot and not much else, any craving beyond that turns into a drive to Palmdale, and so do the supermarket, pharmacy and hardware runs. In exchange, Leona Valley keeps its farm rhythm, orchard rows and pasture lining both sides of the drive home.
