Maywood is a residential town of Los Angeles County squeezed between two of the most industrial cities in the region, with Vernon's plants to the north and Commerce's rail yards and warehouses to the east. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s share lots with back units and small apartment buildings, stucco cottages sit beside Spanish Revival fronts, and very little is new. The west side near Huntington Park is a touch quieter, while the east end runs right up to the river levee. Maywood Riverfront Park changed what outdoor time here looks like. Built on reclaimed industrial land at the far end of Slauson, it opens onto the river trail, so a walk can turn into a long ride north toward Vernon or south past Bell and Cudahy. Smaller parks with ballfields and a YMCA fill in the middle of town. Atlantic Boulevard is the dining street. The Maywood branch of King Taco is a regular late-night stop, Las Trancas serves homestyle Mexican plates and seafood at a sit-down pace, and Guatemalteca Bakery has been turning out Guatemalan sweet breads for decades. Slauson Avenue adds burger stands, bakeries and supermarkets, and most coffee comes from a panaderia counter. Daily life in Maywood happens on foot more than elsewhere in the southeast. Two supermarkets and the library sit within a few blocks of each other on Slauson, Metro buses run both main streets, and the free Maywood Express shuttle covers quick trips around town. Nearly every lot is built out, so new parks, bigger stores and fresh housing have to come from converting old industrial land, and that happens slowly. After a warm day, residents walk up onto the levee path by the river, and a town this tightly built suddenly has a horizon.
