City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Aztec Hotel, Jake's Roadhouse, Foothill Views

Monrovia climbs from the flat commercial blocks of Huntington Drive up to the canyon mouths of the San Gabriel Mountains, and the whole Los Angeles County city makes more sense once you follow that slope. Drive north from the old Route 66 and the housing ages as the ground rises. Midcentury ranch houses and apartment complexes cover the lower city. Closer to downtown come Victorian and Craftsman homes from the citrus era, and above Foothill Boulevard the streets keep rising toward the mountains. Friday evenings turn a few blocks into a street fair, and a farmers market follows on Saturday. Cafe Mundial is the sit-down dinner spot with a seasonal menu and a long wine list, and Jake's Roadhouse down the street has been smoking barbecue for years, with peanuts on the tables. Monrovia Canyon Park is the city's own trailhead, a short drive up Canyon Boulevard from downtown. The walk to the falls is the popular one, while the long loop through the back canyons is a real workout. Plan around the park's midweek closure day. Big grocery runs happen along Huntington Drive, where several chains sit near each other. The Metro A Line stops near the southern end of downtown, with trains toward Pasadena and Los Angeles, so a car-free trip into the city is realistic. The 210 is the dividing line. It crosses the city east to west, and the neighborhoods on either side feel like different towns, one built around cars and big boulevards, the other around a walkable main street and the mountains. Free time tends to pull north toward Myrtle and the canyon, while the weekly errands keep pulling south.
