City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Monument Hills Yolo, Cache Creek Corridor, Yolo Wine Country

Between the city of Woodland and the mouth of the Capay Valley, Monument Hills spreads across about four square miles of Yolo County farm country. Cache Creek runs through the broader region, and the preserve and vineyards sit along it. The community is small and lightly built, with houses scattered along county roads instead of clustered, so the places that define it are mostly on the land. Pedroia Vineyards is the winery here. The Cache Creek Nature Preserve is run by a nonprofit conservancy on land that a gravel company donated to the county, and it anchors the outdoor side with trails, restored wetlands and a Patwin plant garden. It opened to the public in 2000. For a bigger outing, the Capay Open Space Park in the valley has trails and picnic benches, and the creek corridor keeps going upstream. State Route 16 runs up the valley through farm country, and the Patwin garden at the preserve explains how local plants were once used. Woodland, the county seat, is the nearest city for shopping and services, with Interstate 5 and State Route 113 connecting it to Sacramento. Residents also reach into the valley for an errand, and Esparto is the biggest town up that way. The community itself has no downtown or grocery store of its own. The gap between home and the nearest shelf of groceries is the cost. Anything beyond a winery visit or a walk in the preserve starts with a drive, and the roads are narrow county roads shared with farm trucks, so patience is part of the commute. People who live here tend to value the space, the dark skies and the lack of neighbors close enough to hear. The creek, the preserve and the vineyard rows give Monument Hills its character, and the quiet is the part residents tend to mention first.
