City Review
Key Words: Fruit Country Town, Old State Highway, Placer County Foothills

Newcastle is a small fruit-country town on Interstate 80 in western Placer County, set between Auburn to the northeast and the Penryn and Loomis farmland to the southwest. In the railroad era, orchards across these hills sent their harvest to the packing sheds beside the tracks, and the town still carries that agricultural character. Old State Highway, the road that came before the freeway, runs through it alongside the interstate. The landscape is the story. Rolling oak woodland, a few remaining orchards and hillside parcels spread out around the center, and Folsom Lake is close enough for a day on the water. The foothill trails around Auburn are up the highway. Homes range from older farmhouses to newer custom builds on acreage, with a lot of long driveways and room between neighbors. What brings people in from elsewhere is local food. Wild Groves pours olive oils and vinegars at its tasting room, Newcastle Produce runs a specialty market for regional goods, and The Daily Grind is a family-run drive-thru for coffee and smoothies. The town is small enough that these three cover most of what a visitor stops for, and the Main Street packing shed adds a cheese shop and an artists' gallery. Day to day, most routines run through other towns. Auburn has the big grocery stores and the wider choice of restaurants, and Roseville and Sacramento are reachable on the same highway. Newcastle itself is a place to live and sleep, with a few dependable corners and a rhythm that follows the seasons of the orchards. Highway noise is the cost. Interstate 80 runs right past, and the hum is a constant on some streets. What balances it is quick freeway access and a setting that still has orchard and oak around nearly every turn, which is rarer each year in the foothills.
