North Whittier stretches across the unincorporated Los Angeles County land where the Puente Hills drop toward the San Gabriel River, between the Whittier city limit and the 605. More of it is hillside, campus and open ground than most people expect, and the houses fill the flatter pockets in between. The residential streets are postwar single-family blocks, mostly one-story homes on regular lots, laid out over former orange groves after the war. Streets nearer the hills curve and climb, while the lower blocks toward the river run on a straighter grid. For open space, the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area sits just west across the river, with lakes, pedal boats, disc golf and wide fields. Closer to the city, the Hellman Park trailhead climbs into the Puente Hills Preserve, and Pio Pico State Historic Park keeps the last Mexican governor's adobe along the river nearby. Workman Mill Road carries most of the everyday food. For sit-down dinners and a walkable evening, most people drive a few minutes south into Whittier's older downtown blocks. Commutes start on the 605, which connects north to the 10 and south toward Long Beach, and supermarket runs usually head down to Whittier Boulevard. Buses from several agencies cover the area, though the nearest Metrolink station is a drive away. The tradeoff is traffic on the few roads that serve the north end. Life in North Whittier is shaped by what sits around the houses rather than between them, a hilltop campus on one side, green hillsides on the other and a regional park across the river.
