Much of unincorporated Pomona is farmland and hillside, the agricultural grounds of a working university in Los Angeles County near where the 10 and the 57 meet. Walnut, Diamond Bar and the city of Pomona all touch its edges. Cal Poly Pomona runs the fields, barns and research plots, and its academic buildings spread across the rest of the land. Kellogg House, built in the 1920s for the cereal maker's ranch, still stands on the grounds, and Innovation Village, a research park of about 65 acres, sits on another corner of the property. Almost no one owns a house here. The open land is the draw for walkers. A native-habitat reserve covers wild hillside, a Japanese garden offers a quiet loop, and broad lawns connect the academic core. On weekends and in summer the campus paths are quiet, and the gardens are easy to have mostly to yourself. The Farm Store at Kellogg Ranch is the everyday reason outsiders stop by, selling fruit, vegetables and goods grown or made on campus. Other meals come from campus cafes and food courts during the school year, and a real grocery run means driving into Pomona or Diamond Bar. Temple Avenue is the main road through. A free campus shuttle called Bronco Express circles between buildings, and a second route runs riders to the Metrolink stations in Pomona. Freeway access is quick in every direction. Life in unincorporated Pomona is closer to visiting than settling. With so little private housing, living here almost always means a dorm room or an apartment just across the line. For the neighborhoods around it, the land works as a shared backyard of fields and gardens with a university in the middle.
