Mornings in Quartz Hill start at the donut counters and breakfast spots along 50th Street West. The unincorporated Los Angeles County town fills the gap between Lancaster and Palmdale on the west side of the Antelope Valley, and it has kept a small-town center even as both cities grew up around it. The town reads in layers. Older ranch houses from the farm years sit next to stucco tracts added in later decades, and the shops concentrate along a short run of 50th Street West and around the Avenue N shopping center. Housing is overwhelmingly single-story and single-family, set on wide desert lots with space for a workshop or a boat. There is also a mobile home community off Columbia Way. George Lane Park is the civic backyard, with ball fields, skaters and a county community center building, and the nearby county library is the other anchor for meetings and study. For open country, the wildflower hills farther west turn orange each spring. Food is local and unfussy. Best of Europe Deli brings a European deli counter to 50th Street West, and Tasty Donuts in the 45th Street West center handles the early crowd. The Broken Bit Steakhouse serves steak dinners with a Western feel, and there are taco shops and pizza places scattered along the same main drag. What people notice after a while is how much of town life happens along one road, from the first donut to the last steak.
