Rancho Dominguez is a place people work rather than a hometown, an unincorporated Los Angeles County district where freight moving to and from the ports gets stored and sent back out on trucks. Compton sits to the north, Carson to the west and Long Beach to the east, on land that once belonged to the Dominguez family's rancho. The district looks much the same from end to end. Long tilt-up buildings and fenced truck yards fill the blocks, and homes are scarce enough that almost everyone who works here commutes in. East Rancho Dominguez, a residential community on the other side of Compton, shares the name but not the landscape. The main piece of open ground is the garden at the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum, which gives booked tours of the old family home. For real parks, fields and a place to walk, it's a short drive into Carson or Compton. Dignity Health Sports Park, home of the LA Galaxy, sits next door in Carson. Eating out here means the weekday lunch break. A sandwich shop and a small Mexican cafe feed the warehouse crews on weekdays. Dinner and weekend meals happen in Carson or Long Beach. The Metro A Line stops at Del Amo station, raised above Del Amo Boulevard near Santa Fe Avenue, with a park-and-ride lot and shuttles to the stadium on event days. The 710 and 91 freeways border the area, and the rail line to the ports cuts straight through. There is nowhere to buy groceries and little open after dark, so even the few residents do their errands in the next city over. From the elevated Del Amo platform, the view is warehouse roofs in almost every direction, which is the clearest picture of how Rancho Dominguez earns its keep.
