City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Cantonese Dim Sum, Whittier Narrows, Longo Seafood

Rosemead is a flat, fully built-out Los Angeles County city on the valley floor between San Gabriel and El Monte, the sort of place where two big corporate headquarters share the map with strip malls and small houses. Valley Boulevard, just below the 10, carries a long line of Chinese restaurants, hot pot rooms and dessert shops in busy plazas. Garvey Avenue, through the middle, is the Vietnamese corridor, with bakeries, noodle houses and supermarkets. Between those corridors are blocks of modest single-family houses with front yards and driveways, some with a second unit added on the lot. Apartments and small townhome projects gather along the main roads. Longo Seafood on Garvey is a Chinese seafood house that the Michelin Guide lists, while Sea Harbour, a longtime Cantonese dim sum hall, is where a table of har gow starts most weekend mornings. Groceries come from a spread of Asian supermarkets, a discount grocer and a big-box center, and nearly every errand is a short drive and a parking lot. The main city park hosts a certified farmers market, and the 10 puts downtown Los Angeles within reach when traffic cooperates. The tradeoff is the lack of a center. Rosemead never grew a walkable downtown, so its life happens in plazas strung along wide boulevards, and a night out usually means finding a parking space rather than strolling a main street. Once off the boulevards, the grid of small houses is calm, and the corridors that make the city hard to walk are also what put dozens of dinner choices within a few minutes of home.
