West Rancho Dominguez, a county-governed band of Los Angeles County, curls around the western side of Compton, with Gardena beyond it and the Harbor Freeway close by. County maps pair it with Rosewood, one of its residential pockets, and on the ground it reads as a quiet stretch of houses between two busier cities. One-story postwar homes line most streets, each with a driveway, a front lawn or garden and room for a car or two out front, and most are lived in by the people who own them. Closer to the main roads, small apartment buildings and the odd mobile home park break up the pattern. Roy Campanella Park is the neighborhood's own green space, with an outdoor pool, ball fields and a basketball court. For longer walks or a lake, the bigger county park in Willowbrook is a few minutes north by car. Rosecrans Avenue is where the local food is. Tam's Burgers works a busy counter there, and an ice cream shop and a seafood market sit along the same few blocks and on Avalon. There isn't much beyond that, so a sit-down meal usually means Gardena or Compton. Avalon Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue do most of the work for errands, and bigger shopping runs head into the two neighboring cities. The A C Bilbrew Library, a large county branch, sits a short drive north on El Segundo Boulevard. Getting to the train takes a bus or a car, and with no rail stop inside the area most commutes happen on the 110 and 91 freeways. What the streets offer in return is quiet, and on the residential blocks of West Rancho Dominguez the loudest thing on a weekday afternoon is often a lawn mower.
