San Francisquito Canyon and its eastern neighbor, Bouquet Canyon, form the backcountry wedge of Los Angeles County between Saugus and the Antelope Valley. Both roads leave the last cul-de-sacs of Santa Clarita behind and climb into the Sierra Pelona, coming out near Green Valley, Elizabeth Lake and Leona Valley on the far side. Each canyon has its own character. The eastern one follows a creek most of the way and feels closer and greener. Homes in both are spread across ranch parcels and canyon flats, with the densest handful near the city end, and the national forest owns most of the high ground. The western canyon carries a heavy piece of California history. The St. Francis Dam stood there until it collapsed in 1928, and its broken concrete now sits inside a national memorial beside the road, on a route that stagecoaches and older trails used long before the aqueduct era. Recreation leans toward the Bouquet side. Bouquet Reservoir fills a broad stretch of the upper canyon, and the Pacific Crest Trail crosses the road there before climbing to Sierra Pelona Ridge, where the view reaches from the San Gabriels to the desert floor. Food is a drive in any direction. Green Valley SmokeHouse on Spunky Canyon Road serves barbecue near the top of both canyons, and the old roadhouse that once anchored Bouquet Canyon burned and has not come back. Coffee, groceries and dinner out mean heading down to the Saugus shopping centers on Bouquet Canyon Road and Copper Hill Drive. The harder part is how little is close by. Neither canyon has a market or a coffee shop, so a forgotten ingredient means a trip back down the hill, and every errand is measured in canyon miles. Living in San Francisquito Canyon trades that convenience for quiet two-lane roads and hillsides that stay open year after year.
