City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Mission District, Valley Boulevard, Italian Market

San Gabriel is a small, busy city in the middle of the San Gabriel Valley, and within Los Angeles County it has become one of the places people drive to on purpose just to eat. Its oldest landmark is Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, which dates to 1771 and still anchors the historic blocks at the center of town. The Mission District along Mission Drive is the slow, walkable old core, with adobe walls, garden plazas and a museum. Around and between them sit quiet streets of single-family houses, with townhome rows and small condo buildings pressed up against the busier roads. Food is the draw, and it spreads across cuisines. On Valley Boulevard, Chicha San Chen pours Taiwanese tea in a plaza crowded with noodle shops and dessert counters. Outdoor space comes in small doses. Neighborhood parks cover the basics, including one with the city pool, and the plazas around the mission make for a shaded stroll. For hiking or a long run on trails, people drive north to the foothills. Daily errands run mostly by car. One big Asian shopping mall on Valley Boulevard covers a grocery run, a bakery stop and tea in one parking lot, and several supermarkets line the other main roads. The 10 sits just south of town, and pieces of Las Tunas work on foot for anyone living close by. The tradeoff is how little green there is. The city is almost fully built out, parks are compact, and most open space sits outside its limits. What San Gabriel has instead is range, a quiet mission courtyard a few minutes from a dozen kinds of dinner, and a week of living here can easily include both.
