City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: San Martin Wineries, Wings Of History, South Valley Farmland

Between Morgan Hill, about six miles north, and Gilroy to the south, San Martin occupies a quiet stretch of the Santa Clara Valley. San Jose is roughly thirty miles away, and the Santa Cruz Mountains and Diablo Range frame the valley on either side. It is an unincorporated farm village along U.S. 101 and the old Monterey Road, with no traditional downtown. Agriculture and wine give it an identity. Orchards, vineyards and farm stands fill the back roads, and about a dozen wineries, Clos LaChance among them, keep tasting rooms busy on weekends. Much of the land has been worked for generations. Irish immigrant Martin Murphy Sr. Bought acreage here in 1844, and his family's holdings grew into thousands of acres, part of which is now the county's Harvey Bear park. The park opened to the public in 2005 and gives hikers, bikers and riders trails above a reservoir. On a sunny weekend the back roads fill with cyclists and tasting-room visitors, while the rest of the week the main sound is farm equipment. Aviation is the other thread. The county-run airport serves small planes and skydivers, and the Wings of History museum nearby keeps short hours, Tuesday and Saturday only, so plans are best made ahead. Homes lean rural, from farmhouses and ranch properties to estates in the foothills. Large lots and long driveways are standard, which gives the village a pace nothing like the dense suburbs to the north. Dining and shopping in San Martin are modest. Morgan Hill supplies the broader restaurant list and most big stores, and Gilroy is the other regular trip. The cost is convenience. Anyone who wants a coffee shop on the corner or dinner within walking distance will find the towns on either side a better fit, and quiet evenings can feel remote. In exchange, San Martin offers working land, mountain views and an unhurried pace.
