City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Topanga Library, Mulholland Highway, Canyon Hamlets

Topanga Canyon Boulevard in the east and Mulholland Highway winding west toward the Ventura County line do most of the work in the Santa Monica Mountains. Topanga is the busiest of them, with a small village center of cafes, shops and a county library in a canyon still known for artists and owner-built houses. Farther west, the Cornell area and the country around Malibu Lake have a quieter ranch feel, and up the side canyons homes sit alone on ridges and switchbacks. The open land is enormous. Topanga State Park covers a huge block of the eastern range, and parts of it are recovering from the 2025 burn. Along Mulholland, public parkland and ranch preserves line the road, and the ridgeline trail system connects them for anyone willing to walk for a whole day. The Topanga Library on Topanga Canyon Boulevard doubles as a community hub, a green-certified building with study rooms, a nature-focused collection and tile and steel artwork celebrating the canyon. Topanga itself has no gas station, so fueling up and bigger shopping trips mean driving out to Woodland Hills, Calabasas or the coast. Fire-season road closures and ongoing repair work on the canyon roads can turn a short errand into a long loop, and there is no transit worth planning around. People who live in the Santa Monica Mountains measure distance by curves more than miles. A trip to the store is an event, and the reward is coming home to a ridge where the only lights at night are a few neighbors and the stars.
