Most Santa Clarita drivers have looked up at the hills between Saugus and Canyon Country, the brown and green ridges visible from Bouquet Canyon Road on one side and Sierra Highway on the other. They form a block of Los Angeles County territory outside city limits that the city grew around rather than through. Homes are single-family houses and small ranches on big parcels, reached by long driveways off winding roads. Vasquez Canyon Road is the main connector, a back way over the hills that lets residents skip the busier city streets. Most of that open ground is private or too steep to hike, so formal recreation means a short drive. Haskell Canyon Open Space off Copper Hill Drive is the nearest public preserve, with oak groves and meadows, while a longer drive north leads to Bouquet Reservoir and the trails of Angeles National Forest. Errands split two ways, which is the practical perk of sitting in the middle. The Saugus side has the supermarkets and restaurants along Bouquet Canyon Road. The Canyon Country side has Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon Road, plus the Metrolink stop at Via Princessa for trips toward Los Angeles. With little public land and no park of its own, the area offers views more than trails, and brush this thick makes fire season a serious concern. Living in the hills between Saugus and Canyon Country means choosing a quiet ridge over a walkable block, with two full towns' worth of shopping below.
