City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Soquel Drive Corridor, Cummings Park Soquel, Nisene Marks Access

Soquel sits on the north shore of Monterey Bay between Capitola and the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, with a creek of the same name running through it. Locals say it so-KELL. It is an unincorporated community, not a city, and it was first settled in the 1850s. Houseberry covers the community as one neighborhood, so the page takes in everything from the village center to the wooded hills above it. Housing runs from small older cottages to ranch houses and large parcels with acreage, and the redwoods are rarely far from any lot. Several schools serve the area, and the Capitola-Soquel Chamber of Commerce looks after the business side. The village keeps its independent shops and boutiques, and Porter Memorial Library is one of its quiet landmarks. Anna Jean Cummings County Park, known locally as Blue Ball Park, is the biggest nearby green space, with soccer, baseball and softball fields, playgrounds and open coastal prairie. Farther up the hill, a demonstration forest holds mountain bike trails, and Forest of Nisene Marks adds long hiking and running routes. Restaurants lean toward taquerias and Asian kitchens, with cafes and wine rooms mixed in. Little Tampico is one of the Mexican spots locals mention, and Cafe Cruz is a sit-down option near the village. Wineries including Soquel Vineyards add tasting rooms to the mix. Highway 1 handles the coast and freeway runs, Soquel Drive and Main Street cover local trips, and Santa Cruz Metro buses serve routes into Santa Cruz and Watsonville. Distances between the village, schools and shopping stretch out enough that most households keep a car. Beyond the village, side roads climb through redwood parcels toward the demonstration forest, so a short drive covers beach, creek and woods. The place is best understood as a village at the edge of the coast, with a creek in the middle, a hillside behind it and a short drive to the beach.
