Weekend mornings in Valinda often start with crepes, waffles and a cup of cafe de olla at Caramelo Cafe on Valinda Avenue. Unincorporated, with Los Angeles County in place of a city hall, the community is a flat, fully built-out square of the San Gabriel Valley wedged between the La Puente and West Covina city limits. Valinda looks fairly uniform from the air, but it changes at the edges. The inner blocks are quiet single-family streets where houses from the postwar building years have picked up second stories, new porches and wider driveways. Rimgrove Park is the green space inside the lines, and residents lean on nearby county parks for more. Sunshine Park on Deepmead Avenue, just east in San Jose Hills, has a splash pad, and the regional parks toward San Dimas take over when someone wants a lake, trails or a real hike. Amar Road serves as the food street. Jim's Burgers is the old-school stand, sharing a small center with a teriyaki counter and a Mexican market. The side streets off Maplegrove add a taco shop and a pizza place, and Caramelo Cafe has a second location farther west along Amar. Errands are short drives. Big grocery chains sit on the larger boulevards just past the community edges, the 60 freeway runs a few minutes south, and Foothill Transit covers the main roads. Once that is sorted, the routine is simple. Breakfast, groceries and the park all sit within a mile or two, and the drive home from any of them runs past rows of houses that owners have been fixing up for decades.
