A good share of the coffee, frozen food and produce sold around the region is roasted, packed or stored in Vernon, the small industrial city just south of downtown in Los Angeles County. Across town the scenery barely changes. Food plants, cold-storage warehouses, rail spurs and truck yards run block after block, broken up by a few lunch strips and office fronts. Soto Street and Santa Fe Avenue are the closest thing to commercial streets, and Bandini Boulevard carries much of the truck traffic. Homes are rare enough to count by the building. The city itself holds title to most of the few dozen houses. Vernon Village Park Apartments, finished in the 2010s, were the first new units open to the public in generations. There are no parks worth the name inside the city limits, so walks, ball games and playgrounds all happen next door in Huntington Park or Maywood. The food scene is built around production and the weekday lunch hour. Gaviña has roasted coffee on Fruitland Avenue for decades, and the frozen-burrito brand Tina's Burritos lists its home on Vernon Avenue. At midday the Soto Street cluster fills up, with The Green Olive handling Mediterranean plates. The 710 runs along the east side and downtown is a short drive north. The handful of people who live in Vernon have a commute measured in blocks, while tens of thousands of coworkers drive in from across the county every morning.
