Few people live in West Chatsworth, and the land makes the reason obvious. This unincorporated band of Los Angeles County covers the steep sandstone country between the Chatsworth city streets and the Ventura County line, where the Santa Susana Pass carries the 118 freeway over to Simi Valley. Homes here are scattered rather than grouped. A handful of houses and ranch properties occupy big, irregular pieces of ground off private drives and canyon roads, some tucked against rock outcrops and others perched for the view. The variation across the area is mostly about slope: the lower edge feels like the back fence of Chatsworth, while the upper parcels near the county line are pure hillside with neighbors out of sight. Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park takes in hundreds of acres of boulders and chaparral along the old stage route, with trails that start from the Chatsworth side. There are no stores, restaurants or public parks inside West Chatsworth itself. Groceries, coffee and dinner are all down the hill in Chatsworth, where the shopping centers along the main boulevards cover the weekly run. The honest cost is that nothing here is close or public. There is no sidewalk to walk to a neighbor, the nearest park with a playground is in the city below, and brush on every side means clearing defensible space and planning for fire season each year. What owners describe is a strange kind of privacy for Los Angeles. The city is visible from almost every lot, spread out below like a map, and still feels far away once the sun drops behind the pass.
