City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Unincorporated Peninsula, Crenshaw Boulevard, Hillside Homes

Crenshaw Boulevard runs south for miles out of central Los Angeles and finishes its trip by climbing into the hills through Westfield and Academy Hills. The area is mostly two things. A private school campus, Chadwick School, occupies the high ground and shapes the traffic around it. The rest is quiet residential streets that wind along ridges and canyon edges, where the houses sit well apart and many look out toward the South Bay or across open slopes. Houses in Westfield and Academy Hills are mostly ranch and traditional designs, some dating from just after World War II and some far newer, on generous lots below an acre. Rebuilds happen, but slowly, and the hillside shape of the land keeps any one street from filling in. The one commercial landmark is Thacker Berry Farms, the strawberry stand on Crenshaw where drivers pull over for a basket on the way home. South Coast Botanic Garden, just up Crenshaw, is the easy place for a long walk among planted gardens. Daily life means driving. Crenshaw and Palos Verdes Drive North are the only real ways in and out, and school hours bring lines of cars. The biggest adjustment is on the trails. The peninsula's wildest hiking starts at the south end of Crenshaw, but land movement has closed several of those reserves for now, so a trail run often means heading to the coastal bluffs instead. What stays constant is the hush of these streets after dark, with the lights of Torrance spread out below.
