The Puente Hills rise sharply behind the city of Whittier, and most of that ridge is unincorporated Whittier, a county-run stretch of Los Angeles County where open space far outnumbers houses. It divides the Whittier flats from the San Gabriel Valley, and from the top the view runs across both. A community college campus occupies a hilltop near the western end, and much of the remaining land belongs to the Puente Hills Preserve, managed for habitat and trails. Homes are few, mostly individual houses on canyon roads and hillside lots, with the larger residential blocks sitting just downhill inside city limits. The canyon floor holds a creek lined with sycamores, and the upper trails connect east to Hellman Park on the Whittier side, so hikers can make a loop or come down in a different neighborhood than where they started. Everything else happens below. For groceries, coffee or dinner, residents head downhill to Whittier, Pico Rivera or Hacienda Heights, while the 60 and 605 meet near the western foot of the hills. A large Buddhist temple sits across the ridge in Hacienda Heights and shows up clearly from the upper trails. The preserve keeps set hours, with gates opening mid-morning and closing around dusk, so an early run or a night walk on the trails is not an option. In return, unincorporated Whittier offers room and quiet, on a ridge of open land with long views that has changed little in decades.
