Alkali Flat is Sacramento's oldest residential neighborhood, a compact grid just north of downtown that still holds Victorian and Italianate houses from the city's railroad era. Light rail runs straight through it at the Alkali Flat/La Valentina stop, and the Township 9 redevelopment along the river has added newer apartments on the northern edge. You are within walking distance of downtown jobs, the old railyards site, and the river, which is the entire appeal. It is also a neighborhood mid-transition: it backs up to the former Southern Pacific railyards and the freeway, blocks swing from beautifully restored historic homes to harder-luck stretches, and it carries a long working-class, heavily Latino identity that new development is now reshaping. People who want genuine history and a true walk-to-downtown address, and who do not mind an unfinished feel block to block, tend to land here.
