Arleta Park sits just south of Downtown in Half Moon Bay, on a flat, railroad-era street grid that ends at the Wavecrest bluffs. Main Street is a short ride north and the Pacific is the other direction, so most errands and most weekends point one way or the other. Houses in Arleta Park are detached and come from several eras. Small cottages from the railroad-subdivision days stand beside mid-century ranch houses and newer two-story infill, with empty lots between them in places. A block can look half finished and then suddenly very new. Blufftop Coastal Park is the neighborhood's own green edge, and Wavecrest Beach lies just below it. The open space beyond is protected coastal terrace, with a short bird trail along its northern edge that the Coastside Land Trust points to as a winter stop for raptors. Smith Field on Kelly Avenue has ball diamonds and playing fields, with a paved stretch of the Coastside Trail following the bluff toward the state beach. Eating out leans on Main Street. Pasta Moon at 845 Main is listed in the Michelin Guide and is known for its pasta and wood-fired dishes. Moonside Bakery and Cafe, at 604 Main, bakes European-style danishes and serves breakfast and lunch. Half Moon Bay Coffee Company on Stone Pine Road handles the espresso. Daily life splits between walking and driving. Main Street is close enough to walk, though Highway 1 has to be crossed to get there. Larger grocery runs mean a short drive to New Leaf Community Markets on San Mateo Road, and Highway 92 is the road over the ridge when work calls. Building in the gaps is part of living here, so a quiet block can have a new house going up a few lots away, and the wind off the water is steady on the bluff side. Because the land west of the last street is protected terrace, the view at the end of the grid stays open sky and water.
