The Barrio is the oldest neighborhood in Carlsbad, a flat grid of blocks squeezed between the Coaster tracks and Interstate 5, from Oak Avenue down to Tamarack Avenue. Mexican families put down roots here around the time of the Mexican Revolution, and Roosevelt Street at Walnut Avenue has been the center of things ever since. Houses here tend to be small and older, many of them modest single-story houses of two bedrooms or so. The Ramirez House at Roosevelt and Walnut went up in the early 1900s and is counted as the oldest home in the neighborhood. Newer projects arrive one lot at a time, and the city's Village and Barrio Master Plan sets the rules for what replaces what. Lola's 7 Up Market and Deli, at 3292 Roosevelt, is the anchor. Sisters run it, the Jauregui family bought the original store in 1943, and a plaque on the wall calls it the Heart of the Barrio. The little museum of neighborhood history sits right across the street. A few doors up, Cafe Topes has been serving breakfast and cinnamon rolls since 2013, and just over Oak Avenue, The Roosevelt Pizzeria at 3067 Roosevelt does fennel sausage pies and mushroom gnocchi in the evening. Pine Avenue Community Park, on Harding Street since 2006, packs a soccer field, a ball diamond, a basketball court, a playground and a small amphitheater onto one block. Holiday Park, just across the freeway on Chestnut Avenue, is where big birthday parties set up. Tamarack State Beach lies just over the tracks to the west. Daily life leans on your feet. The grid is level, the blocks are short, and the Carlsbad Village Coaster station on State Street puts San Diego and Oceanside within reach without a car. For groceries, the Vons on Tamarack sits just east of the freeway, and the restaurants of the Village start a few minutes north. Interstate 5 runs the whole length of the Barrio on its east edge, so a steady freeway hum is part of the soundtrack, and trains pass along the west side. What keeps this place distinct is that the market and the museum still face each other across Roosevelt, holding the old story in place while the Village keeps growing around them.
