The Fairgrounds neighborhood takes its name from the original California State Fair site that stood near Stockton Boulevard and Broadway before the fair moved to Cal Expo in the late 1960s. Today it is a settled central-east neighborhood near the UC Davis Medical Center, with a mix of older bungalows and postwar homes on a tidy grid between Oak Park and the Tahoe Park area. The med center jobs, the Stockton Boulevard corridor with its deep food scene, and the light rail along the Highway 50 line are all close. It is reasonably central and practical, with the honest caveats of busy arterials on the edges and parking pressure from the nearby hospital. For buyers who want a central-east address tied to the medical campus and the Stockton corridor, the Fairgrounds area offers vintage homes at a more moderate price than East Sacramento.
