Foothill Farms is a large suburban area in the north county, technically outside the city limits in unincorporated Sacramento County, near the Watt Avenue, Auburn Boulevard, and Madison corridors. It built out heavily in the postwar decades, and the housing reflects it: ranch homes and tract subdivisions on comfortable lots, with apartments along the arterials. It sits near the former McClellan airbase, now a business park, and has the practical, workmanlike feel of an older northern suburb, with shopping concentrated on the big arterials rather than a walkable center. The honest notes are heavy arterial traffic and upkeep that varies across such a large area. The appeal is affordability and space well within reach of I-80 and the rest of the metro. It is a roomy, no-frills suburban foothold north of the river.
