Gateway West is a newer mixed commercial-and-residential area in North Natomas, near the Truxel and Del Paso Road corridors on the flat north-of-downtown land that built out in recent decades. The character leans to contemporary apartments, townhomes, and the retail and office space that grew up with the Natomas expansion, with quick I-5 access and a reasonable line to the airport and downtown. As with much of Natomas, it is car-oriented, with shopping in planned centers rather than on a walkable street, and the youngest blocks have limited mature shade against the summer heat. The appeal is relatively new housing close to the freeway and the regional retail. It is a practical, modern slice of Natomas rather than a neighborhood with deep history or a distinct center.
