Old Sacramento is the historic waterfront district along the Sacramento River downtown, and it is far more a destination than a residential neighborhood. The cobblestone streets and Gold Rush-era buildings hold the California State Railroad Museum, restaurants, shops, the riverfront promenade, and the seasonal events that make it one of the region's top visitor draws. There is very little housing inside the boundary; the footprint is tourism, dining, and history. Its value is to the wider central city and the neighborhoods nearby as a riverfront and cultural anchor, freshly connected to downtown by the rebuilt waterfront and the new pedestrian links over the old freeway. The honest note is that it is busy with visitors and quiet on off-hours, a commercial-historic district rather than a place to settle. As an amenity it is a genuine asset; as a place to live it is mostly museums, shops, and river.
