Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Historic Charm, Bay Views, Walkable Access

Old Town–Hurricane Gulch is the historic heart of Sausalito, hugging the steep hillsides just south of downtown. This is where Sausalito began, and the neighborhood still carries much of its early charm—with narrow, winding streets, vintage cottages, and tucked-away staircases winding up the hillsides. The area is known for its dramatic topography, dense greenery, and, as the name implies, occasionally gusty weather patterns that roll in from the coast. Many homes here offer sweeping views of Richardson Bay and Angel Island, particularly those perched higher up along Marion Avenue and South Street. Architecture is a true mix: quaint bungalows, hillside homes with creative footprints, and some larger, more contemporary residences cleverly built into the terrain. Sausalito Boulevard serves as the main spine, twisting through the neighborhood and connecting it to other parts of town. The location is a major draw. Old Town backs up to Highway 101, making for a quick hop into San Francisco or other parts of Marin. At the same time, it's within walking distance of waterfront dining, Swede’s Beach, and Sausalito’s main street shops. Tiffany Park and the start of the Cloudview Trail are both nearby, offering pockets of green space and hiking opportunities. Living in Old Town means embracing Sausalito’s most authentic residential vibe—picturesque, quirky, and full of character.
