Lake Calavera and its preserve take up a big share of Robertson Ranch, one of the newer neighborhoods in north-central Carlsbad, set east of El Camino Real between Calavera Hills and Cannon Road along College Boulevard. Open space that can't be developed rings the homes, so the streets end at hillsides instead of more houses. Robertson Ranch homes lean Spanish Colonial, Mission and Tuscan in style. The East Village, now marketed as The Foothills, filled in around 2010, and the West Village followed after 2017, much of it built by Toll Brothers. Residents share a private recreation center with a pool, spa, cabanas and barbecue stations, along with five pocket parks scattered through the streets. The preserve is the backyard. Trails loop around the Lake Calavera reservoir and climb an ancient volcanic plug, and on a clear day the summit looks all the way to the Pacific. The neighboring Carlsbad Highlands Ecological Reserve adds 473 acres of native habitat where raptors are a common sight. Sage Creek High School and its performing arts center sit on Cannon Road. Farther south, the area turns to business parks along Palmer Way and Loker Avenue, and that is where much of the food is. Prager Brothers on Palmer Way bakes its breads and pastries by hand and runs a small pizza and coffee counter. Culver Beer Co. on Loker Avenue pours a long list of house beers, with sandwiches from its own Locally Toasted deli. Groceries mean a short drive, either to Gateway Road in Bressi Ranch or to the El Camino Real centers near SR-78. College Boulevard and El Camino Real are the main routes, SR-78 is to the north, and the nearest Coaster stop is down in Carlsbad Village. Newness comes with gaps. The residential streets have almost no shops of their own, and the southern edge sits close to McClellan-Palomar Airport, where commercial flights have drawn noise complaints. Walk out at dusk and the view from many Robertson Ranch streets is still mostly open hillside, with the lake catching the last light below.
