Terramar is a small oceanfront enclave in Carlsbad, set along Carlsbad Boulevard between Cannon Road and Palomar Airport Road, with Interstate 5 marking its inland side. William Cannon developed it in the 1950s, and the Cerezo Bluffs lift the coast highway about 50 feet over the water here. A good share of the houses went up around 1965 as weekend beach places, and plenty of those originals remain, along with newer coastal modern builds that rise to two or three stories with rooftop decks. Los Robles Drive and Carlsbad Boulevard front the water. Not every house faces the ocean, but most are within a minute or two of the sand. The beach is the whole point. The Terramar Association keeps a private, gated beach access with a raised deck, benches, a barbecue, a surfboard rack and an outdoor shower. The break below is known for longboarding, and Terramar Beach, south of the old power plant toward Palomar Airport Road, has its own tide pools and draws fewer people than Tamarack to the north. Cannon Park sits at 100 Cannon Road on the north edge. Eating out means a short trip. Miguel's Cocina at 5980 Avenida Encinas, just east of the bluffs near Palomar Airport Road, is known for its creamy jalapeno white sauce with chips and for handmade tortillas. For coffee and a bigger dinner list, Interim Coffee and the restaurants up Carlsbad Boulevard toward the Village are a few minutes north. Daily errands take a car. Ralphs Fresh Fare on Avenida Encinas in Poinsettia is the nearest full grocery, and Interstate 5 has ramps at both Cannon Road and Palomar Airport Road. The Carlsbad Poinsettia Coaster station is a short drive south. Terramar trades convenience for setting. Nothing much is walkable beyond the beach, Carlsbad Boulevard fills with summer traffic, and the industrial land around the old power plant north of Cannon Road is a visible neighbor. When the swell is small and the tide drops, the tide pools below the bluffs open up, and the beach deck becomes the most social spot in the neighborhood.
