West Oakdale runs along the stretch of Highway 120 that passes through town as West F Street, so it is the first part of Oakdale many people see on the way toward Yosemite. Huckleberry's, at 1214 West F Street, closes by mid-afternoon and serves Southern-style breakfast and lunch, chicken and waffles, huckleberry pancakes and biscuits, to locals and to anyone driving up the hill. Behind the highway frontage the streets are residential, with the single-family, ranch-style look common across Oakdale, broken up by small neighborhood parks. River Avenue Park has a playground and a basketball court, William A. Fish Park, off Pontiac Street, has youth baseball and a basketball court and hosts city tennis and pickleball lessons, and Dorada Community Park packs a covered stage, a veterans memorial, picnic tables and a pool that opens in season for swim lessons. Most of these parks have playground equipment and picnic tables, so an afternoon outside takes no planning. For a sit-down dinner, Firenze Ristorante on North Yosemite Avenue does Italian classics along with steaks, seafood and cocktails, and Stevie's Pizzeria is the local pizza stop for takeout nights. Coffee tends to be a drive-through habit, with a Dutch Bros on North Yosemite Avenue. Cost Less Food Company covers everyday groceries inside the neighborhood, and the larger supermarkets are over on the Burchell Hill and east sides. The highway doubles as the main way in and out, so a trip to Modesto or up to the foothills starts at your front door. Downtown sits right next door, so the Cowboy Museum, the taproom and the Saturday market are an easy drive east along F Street. Because this is the road to the mountains, summer weekends bring heavier traffic past the shops and restaurants. Off-peak, West Oakdale settles back into an ordinary working stretch of town, and it is an easy place to leave from and come back to.
