Whittier Hills is the city's open-space neighborhood, where hillside homes sit beside thousands of acres of protected chaparral, canyon trails and wildlife habitat. Curving streets and cul-de-sacs climb toward Turnbull Canyon and Skyline Drive, trading the flat convenience of central Whittier for views, quiet and immediate access to the Puente Hills. Housing is mostly single-family construction from the 1950s through the 1970s, built for the terrain rather than a grid. Homes vary with the slope, and most errands require a drive down into the flats. The neighborhood has little commercial activity of its own, making the preserved landscape rather than a town center its defining feature. Turnbull Canyon provides one of the area's best-known routes and trail systems. Sycamores line the creek at the bottom, while paths climb through land managed by the Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority. Much of the open ground once belonged to oil companies and was purchased with park-bond money, preventing large housing projects and preserving a major habitat corridor. Oil production is the reason portions of the ridge remained undeveloped long enough to be saved. More than 500 wells once operated in the Whittier Main field. Later drilling proposals became the subject of conservation agreements and legal disputes, so the landscape reflects both industrial history and deliberate preservation. The closed Puente Hills Landfill occupies another large piece of nearby terrain and is planned in part for a regional park. Wildfire risk is the more immediate concern. State maps place the chaparral hills in elevated hazard tiers, and narrow hillside routes make evacuation planning important. Whittier Hills suits residents who prioritize views, trails and natural surroundings over walkable errands. Its ethos is rugged and outdoors-oriented. The protected hills are the neighborhood's greatest amenity, while fire exposure, steep roads and former industrial land require serious attention.
