Agua Dulce, CA

Agua Dulce is a high-desert wine and horse town in the northern hills of Los Angeles County, strung along Sierra Highway where the drive from Santa Clarita to Palmdale leaves the suburbs behind. Canyon Country lies to the south and Acton to the north, and this community keeps a looser, more open layout than either. Sierra Highway carries the wineries and a couple of landmark restaurants. Agua Dulce Canyon Road holds the small cluster of shops and eateries that works as a downtown. Off both, dirt lanes lead back to ranch houses and custom homes on acreage, many with arenas or paddocks, and chaparral fills the space between them. Wine gives the town its weekend identity. For an easy weeknight dinner, Maria Bonita on Agua Dulce Canyon Road is the Mexican restaurant locals fall back on. Vasquez Rocks Natural Area, the county-run field of tilted sandstone, has scrambling routes, trails and a nature center, and it sits inside the community, so a short scramble fits into an ordinary afternoon. Film crews still use the rocks and the ranches around them, and handling horses for those shoots is steady local work. Everyday errands are a drive. State Route 14 is the spine, and a full grocery trip heads south into Canyon Country or north to Palmdale. The restaurants and small shops in town cover coffee, a quick meal and not much more. Summer is the hard part. Agua Dulce pays that back at the other end of the day, when the heat breaks and low evening light turns the sandstone gold.
