City Reviews & Questions

City Review
Key Words: Foothill City, Downtown Dining, Metro Stations

Two Metro A Line stations bracket Azusa, one at the downtown core and one beside the college campuses on the east side, and between them sits a foothill city that has grown up around both the trains and the students. The northern streets climb toward the foothills with ranch houses and bungalows on quieter blocks. The eastern side revolves around Azusa Pacific University and the community college next door, with student rentals and chain dining along Alosta Avenue, while the western edge gives way to quarries and industrial land. The mountains are close enough to shape weekends. Highway 39 leads straight up San Gabriel Canyon, and Azusa River Wilderness Park at the canyon mouth offers a riverside walk before the road climbs toward campgrounds and trailheads deep in the national forest. In town, a network of small city parks covers ball games and playgrounds. Downtown has become a real place to eat. Clandestino Gastro-Bar on Foothill Boulevard mixes modern Mexican plates with cocktails and a weekend brunch, and on Alosta Avenue, The Patio Mediterranean Cuisine cooks Lebanese food for the campus crowd and everyone else. Daily errands mostly stay on the main boulevards, where supermarkets and strip centers fill most of the frontage. The tradeoff comes on summer weekends, when traffic heading for the canyon backs up along Azusa Avenue and Highway 39, and residents learn to run errands early. Living in Azusa means having both a small downtown and the mountains within reach, and many residents fit a canyon walk and a downtown dinner into the same afternoon.
